My Journey of Growth and Innovation of Spurtcommerce

My Early Days with Magento
Back in 2010, I was using Magento to build custom e-commerce stores for my clients. While Magento was a decent platform, it had its limitations, particularly when it came to scaling and making significant changes. Being primarily a PHP user, I stuck with it, but deep down, I knew there had to be a better solution.
Exploring NodeJS
In 2016, my exploration of NodeJS began, and it was a game-changer. The performance and scalability it offered were unmatched compared to PHP-based platforms. After a year of analyzing NodeJS, I started searching for an open-source eCommerce solution built on this technology, but none were reliable enough.
The Birth of Spurtcommerce
In 2017, I decided to create my own solution—Spurtcommerce. With the help of four developers, I embarked on this journey in March 2017. By November 2017, Spurtcommerce was ready to be released as an open-source NodeJS eCommerce solution. The excitement of seeing the first download on GitHub was a validation of our efforts, and it encouraged us to keep going.
First Success and Challenges Along the Way
Spurtcommerce was entirely self-funded. To sustain the project, I had to take on client work, which often meant pulling developers from Spurtcommerce, slowing down our progress. Some of our talented developers moved on to larger companies, leveraging their work on Spurtcommerce to secure better opportunities. Though this was tough, it also gave me pride, as Spurtcommerce was helping build careers.
Participating in OSI Event – 2018
In 2018, we took part in the Open-Source India (OSI) event in Bangalore. This was a great opportunity for us to showcase Spurtcommerce and connect with the larger open-source community. The exposure gave us valuable insights and helped build credibility within the open-source space.
The First Customization and Revenue Generation
The breakthrough came in 2018 when we were approached by a client from Australia for a Spurtcommerce customization project. This project, which generated $700, marked our first revenue from Spurtcommerce. Encouraged by this success, we began receiving requests for a multi-vendor platform, which led us to embark on developing Spurtcommerce’s Marketplace solution in early 2019.
First Developer Meeting – 2019
In September 2019, we hosted our first developer meeting, an open house where developers could discuss and share their experiences working with Spurtcommerce and also seek advises on how they can adopt eCommerce Development with modern tech stack. This meeting was a pivotal moment in building a strong developer community around Spurtcommerce, enabling knowledge sharing and fostering collaboration.
Competing with Established Platforms: Magento and CS-Cart
As Spurtcommerce gained recognition, many prospects began asking if I was competing with Magento or CS-Cart. I explained that these platforms are PHP-based, while Spurtcommerce is built on NodeJS, making it fundamentally different. Some also pointed out that Magento and CS-Cart had more features. I acknowledged this, reminding them that those platforms had been around for several years, while Spurtcommerce was still young. I assured them that over time, we would also offer many out-of-the-box features.
The Marketplace Edition and Global Expansion
In January 2020, we released the multi-vendor marketplace edition of Spurtcommerce as a premium version, while keeping the single-vendor version free for the community. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the need for eCommerce solutions, and Spurtcommerce became a popular choice for businesses transitioning online. Clients from countries like Hong Kong, UAE, and Italy began using and customizing Spurtcommerce for their unique needs.
Transition to Microservices Architecture
Until 2023, Spurtcommerce operated on a monolithic architecture. However, client feedback led us to transition to a microservices architecture to improve flexibility and scalability. This shift marked a major milestone in 2024, ensuring Spurtcommerce remained future-ready and adaptable to evolving business needs.
The Road Ahead
With each challenge, Spurtcommerce has continued to grow and innovate. From its inception as an open-source solution to becoming a globally recognized eCommerce platform, we are committed to evolving and meeting the market’s demands. The journey of Spurtcommerce has just begun, and we are excited about the future.
